Courgette porridge, also known as 'zoats', is the perplexing breakfast trend taking over Instagram
‘TIS THE SEASON for eating porridge and keeping warm.
And if you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ll know that there are seemingly infinite ways to jazz up your porridge.
“Add spirulina! Scatter dessicated coconut on top! Top it with berries!”
But this new porridge trend is downright confusing
Introducing zoats.
Zoats — short for ‘zucchini oats’ — is essentially porridge made with courgettes.
According to this recipe, you put oats, grated courgette, water and salt in a saucepan and let it simmer for 10 minutes. (Some other recipes call for egg whites, too.) Afterwards you add your toppings and, hey presto, you have… courgette porridge.
Some people also opt for the ‘overnight zoats’ option which involves soaking courgette in oats overnight overnight and adding toppings the next morning. Er, yum.
It’s officially been a thing since last summer after it gained popularity on, what else, Pinterest

Since then, it’s exploded in popularity and become a firm favourite among the #cleaneats contingent
It’s apparently high in fibre, low in calories and very filling.
But what does it actually taste like?
Many are adamant that it’s delicious.

But others? Not so much.

And non-zoats converts are just plain perplexed
Over on Instagram, meanwhile, it’s just a neverending stream of #zoats
